The American Legion, Department of Indiana was chartered August 1, 1920. There are nearly 400 American Legion posts located in Indiana comprising more than 87,000 members. The American Legion is the nations largest wartime veteran service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to service members and veterans.
Individual Indiana posts in communities are grouped by district under the Department of Indiana. All state departments fall under the national American Legion Headquarters located in downtown Indianapolis. At each level the Legion has a committee devoted to Americanism, community service, youth activities, volunteerism, legislative and religious matters, veterans rehabilitation, and much more.
American Legion members volunteer and contribute to the wellbeing of their individual communities from donating blood each year, awarding scholarships, participating in community projects, giving emergency aid and charter youth activities. Many of the individual Posts have a clubhouse, which is used by the community as well as for American Legion social functions.
