Legal Aid of Bartholomew County

Legal Aid of Bartholomew County

Legal Aid - District Eleven, Inc. (Legal Aid) is a private not-for profit, legal services provider serving low-income individuals in eight rural counties in south central Indiana (Pro Bono District I), without the assistance of any federal Legal Services Corporation funds. Our counties include Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson , Jennings , Johnson, Shelby and Rush.

Legal Aid has been providing free pro bono referral and legal counseling services to eligible applicants in Bartholomew County since its formation by the Bartholomew County Bar Association in 1982. The program began when the office of federally funded Legal Services Organization withdrew from Bartholomew County and consolidated in Monroe County ( Bloomington ) due to severe federal funding cuts in the early 1980s. The Bartholomew County Bar Association then began Legal Aid in order to meet the needs of the poor in the county with an organized system for pro bono intakes and referrals.
